Seven Spires ] [ Morris Library ] Tribute Park ]

Three dimensional model of the two sculptures as they will be sited in the Morris Library.

Morris Library Sculptures (to be installed in 2008)

Commissioned by the Capital Development Board of Illinois for the Morris Library at the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Media: stainless steel, aluminum.

Evan Lewis was selected a finalist in creating a sculpture for the Morris Library that has been undergoing extensive renovation.

The proposal consists of two sculptures - an exterior piece and an interior ceiling-hung mobile. The exterior sculpture is a wind-powered spinner that will be attached to the facade. A shaft piercing the facade will connect the spinner to the interior mobile. The power of the wind will be transferred through the shaft and a series of gear reductions and will put the ceiling-hung sculpture in motion. The mobile will move very slowly and deliberately, no matter what the velocity of the wind is. On the other hand, the exterior spinner might move very dynamically at times in an interesting contrast to the interior piece.
The external spinner will be about twenty-four feet in diameter when fully extended. The interior mobile will be thirty-six feet high and will move in a cylinder that has a diameter of sixteen feet. The mobile will be elevated about twelve feet off the ground.
